It is believed that donations made on this full moon day bring virtuous results. Worshiping Lord Vishnu and reciting the Vishnu Sahasranama on this day are also considered highly fruitful.
Why is Vaishakh Purnima called Buddha Purnima?
It is believed that three important events in Gautam Buddha’s life occurred on Vaishakh Purnima. According to Hindu mythology, Mahatma Buddha was born on Vaishakh Purnima as the ninth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, showing the path of non-violence, peace, and wisdom. He attained enlightenment (Bodhi) on this day in Bodh Gaya. It is also said that Buddha attained complete liberation from worldly bondage in Kushinagar on Vaishakh Purnima. These events in Buddha’s life on Vaishakh Purnima are why it is called Buddha Purnima. Therefore, Buddha Purnima is not just a festival, but also a message of introspection, peace, and positive living. Buddha Jayanti is celebrated to commemorate the birth, enlightenment, and Mahaparinirvana of Lord Buddha.
On Buddha Jayanti or Buddha Purnima, Buddhists spread the message of meditation, prayer, and peace. On this day, people wear white clothes and offer flowers and lamps at temples and stupas. Special prayer services are also held at religious places like Bodh Gaya and Sarnath.
The Bodhi Tree (a sacred peepal tree located in Bodh Gaya, Bihar) is believed to be the place under which Lord Buddha attained enlightenment. Therefore, lighting a lamp near the Bodhi Tree or peepal tree on Buddha Purnima is considered very auspicious.
