World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (World Telecommunication Day) is being celebrated across the world (Tuesday), 17 May. The purpose behind this day is to create awareness among people about telecommunication technologies. Know its history
Since the establishment of the International Telecommunication Union on May 17, 1865, May 17 is known as the first ‘World Telecommunication Day’. It was announced at the International Telecommunication Union Plenary Conference in Antalya, Turkey. However, after the World Summit on Information Society in 2005, on the resolution of the United Nations General Assembly, 17 May was declared as World Information Society Day. In November 2006, at the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference in Antalya, Turkey, it was decided to celebrate May 17 as both World Telecommunications and World Information Society Day.
