What is “Name Day” Tradition? [TKB-Europe]

¡Feliz santo!

Last when your Spanish fellow said you “es el día de mi santo,” (literally means “it’s my saint’s day”) or in English we can say like “it’s my name day”? While this is a Spanish concept and many other European Countries observing the Roman Catholic and/or Greek Orthodox calendar of saints.In Catholic families (especially Spanish family) they tend to choose names for their children that come from Bible or connected to the history. So they have their special day dedicated to their names. Historically many Spaniards would name their child after the saint whose day the child was born on, but now days it is more common to have a saint’s day that does not fall on your birthday.

HOW ARE “NAME DAYS” CELEBRATED?

Name traditionalist already has their Calendar with the different names for the specific months. For entire 12 month they have their own list, for this running month of July you can see the following list-

Let’s take few examples from this month List, so yesterday was 23^rd day of July 2021 it means we can see from the above calendar list that, July 23^rd was the day of saint  Brigida, Teresa, and Boris. So everyone named as well as some variation will be congratulated by friends and family. Well today is July 24^th so as per calendar list it is the Santo for “Cristina”

So today, named Cristina will celebrate her Santo. From the team of topknowledgebox wish you happy Santo Day ‘mi esposa’.  Some Saints days are also a local or national holidays such Día de San Jordí (St. George), which is celebrated on April 23rd in Catalonia, and Día de San Juan (St. John), which is popularly celebrated on June 24th in a variety of Spanish towns, especially on the beach where bonfires and a midnight dip in the water is involved.
