Amid rising tensions in West Asia and uncertainty in the global energy market, the Indian government has taken a major step to secure the supply of cooking gas. The central government has directed the country’s oil refineries to increase LPG production. It has also stated that domestic consumers should be prioritized in gas supplies. The government believes that if the crisis in West Asia deepens, energy supplies could be affected, so advance preparation is essential.
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas stated that the ongoing conflict in West Asia is likely to impact global energy supplies. India meets its substantial LPG needs through imports, a significant portion of which comes through the Strait of Hormuz. Therefore, the government has directed refineries to produce more LPG and divert the excess gas to domestic consumers.
Why was domestic consumers prioritized?
The government has clarified that if LPG supplies are affected due to the international crisis, domestic consumers’ needs will be met first. For this purpose, a 25-day gap has been made mandatory between domestic gas cylinder bookings. This step has been taken to prevent hoarding and panic-booking.
Why is the Strait of Hormuz important?
India imports a large amount of LPG and crude oil from West Asia. A significant portion of these supplies passes through the Strait of Hormuz. This sea route is considered one of the world’s most important energy routes. Escalating conflict in West Asia also poses a threat to the security of ships transiting this route, potentially disrupting energy supplies.
What could be the impact on the industry and hotel sector?
The government has also begun reviewing non-domestic LPG supplies. According to officials, gas supplies to hotels, restaurants, and industries are being monitored. If the situation worsens, supplies to these sectors may be limited to prioritize domestic needs. However, gas supplies to essential sectors such as hospitals and educational institutions will continue.
What is the government’s future strategy?
The government is currently working on a strategy to increase LPG production, strengthen the distribution system, and prioritize domestic consumers. It is also continuously monitoring the global energy market situation. Energy experts say that cooking gas is integral to the daily lives of millions of families in the country, so the government does not want to allow this supply to be affected under any circumstances.
