According to another story, when the people of the Netherlands went to live in the colonies of the New World, they started telling stories of Sinterklaas. Sinterklaas is the Dutch translation for Saint Nicholas. By the year 1700, the stories of the saint’s generosity reached far and wide in America and the pop culture there changed his image. Eventually after his death, his name became famous as Santa Claus.

Well, Santa wasn’t always the guy with a round belly. Writer, Washington Irving, in his 1809 book “The Knickerbockers History of New York” portrayed the image of Santa as “a pipe-smoking, slim figure who flies across rooftops in a wagon delivering presents to good children.”
