Shahid takes over as President of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly [TKB World]

The 76th session of the UN General Assembly began on Tuesday and outgoing President Volkan Bozkier handed over the charge of President of the General Assembly to Shahid.

The session begins at a time when the world is gripped by a pandemic which also comes with vaccination equality and Afghanistan issue on the table.

After taking over as the president of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly consisting of 193 member states, Shahid said, “To say that 18 months has been challenging, has to be downplayed. Millions of people lost their lives, millions of people got sick, billions had to suffer due to this Pandemic.

Shahid told UN ambassadors, diplomats, representatives that he has ’embracing hope’ as the theme of his presidency, he will take the scenario positively as much as possible.

Outlining his ‘five rays of hope’, Shahid said that vaccination around the world will be his top priority to recover from COVID-19 and he will attempt equality among the nations.

In his remarks at the General Assembly, Shahid said that his second ray of hope is to build stability from the pandemic and he will work with the UNGA framework.

He will also launch the President of General Assembly Youth Fellowship Program to empower the youth around the members nation.

On UN reform, Shahid underlined that “we must, once again, make the United Nations a platform for all”, a platform of ” of the people”.
