Greece is currently facing the very dangerous effects of global warming. For the second consecutive day on Sunday, firefighters battled forest fires in the island of Lesbos. On the other hand, fire has started spreading in western Peloponnese and northern Greece, which remains a challenge for firefighters. Nearby settlements have been evacuated due to the fire.
On Saturday, fire started in the mountainous forests of Lesbos in the Aegean Sea, near Turkey. Due to which many houses built on Vatera beach caught fire. Two villages – Vrisa and Stavros – have been evacuated because of the fire. Forest fires have also started in mainland Greece, threatening the houses of Crestena in western Peloponnese. Here too people are being forced to vacate the village.
City council member Anastasios Carnaros said on TV, ‘Flames have engulfed the city, many houses have been destroyed by the fire, we need help.’ According to the Meteorological Department, the effect of the heatwave spread in Europe is beginning to be felt in the east as well. Temperatures reached 40 degrees Celsius in some parts of Greece on Sunday. There the temperature is expected to remain like this for a week.
9 cities of Italy were put on red alert due to heatwave. Which has now increased to 14. These also include beautiful and cold cities like Rome, Milan and Florence. This is the worst summer in the country in the last 30 years. During this time, wildfires have destroyed about 300,000 acres (121,000 ha) of forest and shrubs across Greece and parts of Europe.
