Public voted and ‘banned’ on electric scooters! from 1 September [TKB World]

The demand for electric scooters is increasing rapidly all over the world, where governments are coming forward to promote the use of electric vehicles in many countries. There is also a country in the world where the use of electric scooters has been banned. Paris will ban electric scooters coming September 1, the French capital’s mayor said, after the public voted to take them off the streets.

There is a trend of renting electric scooters in Paris. Now the people there have voted to remove these scooters from the road, after which this decision has been taken. At the same time, e-scooter operators still have hopes that the government will change this decision and implement a new scheme. According to the City Hall Twitter account, 89% of people voted to ban e-scooters.

The referendum was held in response to the growing number of people injured and killed on e-scooters in the French capital. According to official data, only 103,000 of the 1.38 million people on the city’s electoral register participated in the voting, and of these, more than 91,300 voted in favor of banning electric scooters. For this voting, ballot boxes were installed at many places in the city, in which people registered their votes.

These electric scooters have become the cause of death:

First of all, let us tell you that the electric scooters that have been banned in Paris are not like regular two-wheeler scooters. It is a free-floating electric scooter that looks like a skateboard and is ridden by people standing on it. Sometimes two people ride on a scooter together. Renting of such electric scooters is also in vogue, which are used by locals and tourists to move around the city.

But now these electric scooters are becoming a problem for many people. In the year 2021, a 31-year-old Italian woman was killed after being hit by one such electric scooter. During this accident, she fell and hit her head on the pavement, due to which she had a heart attack. Apart from this, there have been many such incidents in which people have been seriously injured. On the other hand, the operators of e-scooters argued that the number of accidents involving electric scooters is very less as compared to all the accidents occurring in the city.

What the mayor says:

The mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, recently decided to hold a referendum. Under which it was to be decided on the basis of voting whether the use of these scooters should be banned or not. Privately owned vehicles were not part of the vote in this vote for or against these free-floating e-scooters. That is, this decision has been taken only for those vehicles which are available on rent. After the result of this vote, the mayor said, “I am fully and simply committed to respecting the choice of the voters.”

10 minutes fare Rs 450:

Rent of these free-floating electric scooters in Paris is also very expensive. Private operators charge up to five Euros for just 10 minutes to drive these scooters, which when converted to Indian currency will be around Rs 450. Mayor Anne Hidalgo also said, “It’s too expensive – five euros (£4.40 or $5.40) for 10 minutes, plus it’s not very sustainable, and above all, it’s the cause of too many accidents.”
