India has got a big success. Indian scientists have made 3D printed cornea for the first time in the history of medical world. This will help people suffering from eye problems.
This 3D printed cornea has been made by scientists from LV Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI), IIT Hyderabad (IITH) and Center for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB). This cornea has also been transplanted into a rabbit. This cornea is made from the corneal tissue of the human eye.
This cornea has been completely made by the country’s scientists with indigenous technology. It does not contain any synthetic components and can be applied to patients as well.
The cornea is the outer layer of the eye. Because of this, the eyes are protected. The cornea gets damaged due to injury, infection, cancer of the eye or due to poor eating habits. This causes blurring and sometimes the light also goes out. If the cornea gets damaged, it has to be transplanted to maintain the eyesight.
How to make 3D cornea?
According to the news agency, scientists from LVPEI, IITH and CCMB made biomimetic hydrogels by extracting decellularized corneal tissue and stem cells from the human eye. 3D printed cornea was made from this hydrogel. Scientists say that this 3D printed cornea has been prepared from the corneal tissue of the human eye, so it is completely biocompatible and natural.
LVPEI scientists Dr. Sayan Basu and Dr. Vivek Singh said that this will prove to be helpful in treating diseases like corneal scarring (in which the cornea becomes opaque) and keratoconus (in which the cornea becomes thin). They say that this is a completely made in India product and is the first 3D printed human cornea which is also suitable for transplantation. He told that many times the cornea of army soldiers gets damaged due to injury. In such a situation, the light of those soldiers can be saved with the 3D printed cornea.
