All players and staff safe
Hours before the opening match of the Women’s Football World Cup at Eden Park in Auckland, there has been a shooting in one of the busy streets of the city centre. The Prime Minister of New Zealand issued a statement saying that it is not a threat to national security. Apart from this, the US national team present in Auckland issued a statement saying that all its players and staff are safe.
It was told by the police that the gunman went ahead waving the gun near the construction site and started firing. Several rounds were fired from the side of the accused. After a while the police killed him.
The New Zealand PM said an eyewitness called police to report a man firing a gun at a building on Lower Queen St in central Auckland. After this the police reached the spot. I have to say with great sadness that two people have died in this firing. The PM said that six others were injured in the incident. He has been taken to Auckland Hospital.
The attacker was armed with a shotgun
According to the PM’s statement, the criminal was armed with a pump action shotgun. He locked himself in an elevator when he reached the top of the building. I would like to thank the brave New Zealand Police constables and women who put themselves forward to save the lives of others.
The government has spoken to FIFA organizers this morning and the tournament will go ahead as planned.
