A boat carrying African migrants capsized off the coast of Libya on Monday, killing at least 57 people. The United Nations has given information about this. International Organization for Migration spokesman Safa Masehli said the ship had left the western coastal city of Khams on Sunday.
Safa Masehli said that at least 75 migrants, including women and children, were on board the boat, which sank, killing a large number of people, according to AP news agency. He also said that 18 migrants were rescued by fishermen and Libyan coast guards in a rescue operation and sent back to the coast.
Most of those who survived the accident are from Nigeria, Ghana and The Gambia. Eyewitnesses say that the boat had come to a halt due to engine failure, the weather was bad, during which the accident happened due to the boat overturning. The tragic death of migrants looking for a better life in Europe died in this accident. Innocent people were killed in this accident caused by bad weather in the Mediterranean Sea.
Libya becomes transit point for migrants
In recent months, there have been a large number of cases of infiltration and infiltration attempts of migrants from Libya. Amnesty International has said that in the first six months of this year, more than 7,000 people caught at sea have been forcibly returned to detention camps in Libya. Libya has emerged in recent years as a major transit point for migrants fleeing war and poverty in Africa and the Middle East.
Libya is facing anarchy
The country, rich in oil and petroleum wealth, has been facing chaos since the NATO-backed insurgency. This rebellion and chaos led to the death of long-time autocratic leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. Rights groups and officials from UN agencies working for migrants and refugees have long warned of persecution in Libya’s detention camps.
Detention camp turned into concentration camp
These camps are like torture camps. These include forced labor, assault, rape and torture. Abuse is often done to grab money from families. This is done so that the migrants can be driven out of Libya through smugglers’ boats.
