Indonesia shaken by earthquake, buildings collapsed, 162 deaths so far [TKB World]

Large buildings collapsed in Indonesia’s capital Jakarta on Monday in a jolt of earthquake. So far the death of 162 people has been confirmed. Hundreds of people have been injured. The intensity of the earthquake was 5.6. The death toll may increase. A large number of people are buried under the debris. Rescue workers are reaching the spot on Tuesday to reach the people trapped in the debris after the earthquake.

The epicenter of the earthquake was near the city of Cianjur in a mountainous region of Indonesia’s most populous province. People got scared due to the tremors of the earthquake on Monday afternoon and were forced to leave their homes and run on the streets. Buildings collapsed due to the earthquake. The parking lot of the hospital in Cianjur was filled with victims throughout the night. Some were treated in makeshift tents. Others were put on a drip on the pavement.

Kuku, 48, who was being treated in the crowded hospital parking area, told news agency Reuters that the building collapsed in a sudden jolt and everything collapsed. I got crushed. My two children were saved, I somehow pulled both of them out and brought them to the hospital. One is still missing. Tears were not stopping from Kuku’s eyes.

National police spokesman Dedi Prasetyo told the Antara state news agency that hundreds of police officers had been deployed to rescue operations on Tuesday morning. West Java Governor Ridwan Kamil said Monday’s earthquake had killed at least 162 people, many of whom were children, and injured more than 300. He said that the number of injured and deaths could increase.

BNPB said the quake was felt some 75 km (45 miles) away in the capital, Jakarta. At least 2,200 homes were damaged and more than 5,000 people were displaced.
