February 13 is celebrated as World Radio Day. Its purpose is to underline the importance of radio as an entertainment, information and communication medium. On this occasion, UNESCO organizes various activities in association with broadcasters, organizations and communities.
Radio is an important medium of entertainment, information and communication, it also acts as an empowerment of people as a medium of information.
World radio day
In 2011, UNESCO announced to celebrate February 13 as World Radio Day at the 36th General Assembly. Later it was declared as International Day by the United Nations General Assembly. On the same day in 1946, the first call sign was transmitted by United Nations Radio. World Radio Day was first celebrated in 2012.
