Sri Lanka is currently going through the worst economic phase since independence. The situation seems to be going from bad to worse. Meanwhile, Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has decided to impose emergency in the country. It has been said in the issued order that this decision has been taken for the security of the country and maintenance of supply of essential services. This emergency has been imposed since April 1. Now this decision has been taken by President Rajapaksa at a time when the demonstration against him and his government has intensified in the country. Ever since the economic crisis broke out in Sri Lanka, ever since the country has reached the brink of bankruptcy, people’s anger against the President is erupting. Violent demonstrations were also witnessed outside his residence on Thursday. The situation got so bad that the police force used water cannons on the protesters.
Many such pictures are coming out from different areas of Sri Lanka. Clashes are taking place with the police, tear gas shells are being fired and the atmosphere on the ground remains tense. Now all this is happening because Sri Lanka is facing many challenges simultaneously. A big power crisis has arisen, the country is being forced to live in darkness for hours. There is no more diesel left at the filling stations for buses and commercial vehicles. According to officials and media reports, public transport services in Sri Lanka have been severely affected.
Apart from all this, a tremendous impact of this economic crisis has also been seen on the education of students in Sri Lanka. For the first time, there has been such a shortage of paper in the country that the examinations have been postponed indefinitely. Being troubled by all these challenges, many people have now come on the road. They are protesting for their rights. For this reason, curfew has been imposed in Colombo North, Colombo South, Colombo Central and Nugegoda Police Divisions.
