Sweden prime minister’s abrupt resignation [TKB World]

Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven said on Sunday that he would step down in November 2021 from his the post of Prime Minister. Löfven, who has been prime minister since 2014, also announced that he would step down as head of the Social Democratic Party in November.

He made his unexpected announcement during the annual summer speech ahead of next year’s general election, internal sources said that he must had some political pressure to do the announcement. Lofven is the first Swedish leader to fail to prove a majority in parliament earlier this year.

Lofven said he had informed the party, “I want to step down as party president in November and also to step down as prime minister.”

However, it is not immediately clear who will succeed Löfven. He has been the party chief since 2012, which is Sweden’s largest party and currently holds 100 of the 349 seats in parliament.
