32 killed in violent clashes in Libya [TKB World]

There is turmoil in Libya these days. The situation has worsened after at least 32 people were killed in clashes between supporters of rival governments in Libya. The violent clashes come months after the escalating tension between supporters of Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dabiba and Fati Bashaga. After this violence, there is currently tense peace in the capital Tripoli. There is silence on the streets.

According to the information, some armed forces carried out violence in Tripoli on Friday evening. There was arson in many places. During this, a hospital was also vandalized. Many buildings were set on fire. Such violence has erupted after the 2020 ceasefire in the Libyan capital Tripoli. According to officials, the Health Ministry said that about 32 people have died in the violent clashes. There has been a general peace in Libya for the past two years, but on Sunday there was fierce firing between the army and rebel groups.

Such violence happened after 2 years

After the violent clash in 2020, such situations have arisen again. In fact, the long-running conflict was pacified by America’s intervention. Former Interior Minister Bashagha at first denied the use of violence to take power in Tripoli, but indicated that he could also use force if needed. Libya plunged into chaos after the coup and assassination of dictator Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, with several armed groups and foreign powers trying their best to fill the power void.

This is the reason for violence

The impasse has escalated after Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dabiba refused to step down. At the same time, after the violent clashes, both the sides are blaming each other. While world powers have appealed for peace. The Libyan mission of the United Nations, referring to the indiscriminate firing and conflict in civilian populated areas, has said that it should be stopped with immediate effect, there is no place for enmity, it is better to end it.

Government’s claim – Violence erupted after talks

Dabiba’s government said a meeting had been called to prevent violent clashes in the western city, but the conflict escalated after talks. At the same time, Bashagha has denied such talks. Prime Minister Dabiba was accused of running the administration illegally and of attachment to power. According to local media, a group of pro-Bashagha fighters were moving from Misrata to the capital Tripoli, which later returned.
