The social significance of this festival in Bengali Hindu society is undeniable. This festival is celebrated especially in the families where there is a newly married daughter. During the puja, new clothes, fruits, betel-nuts, paddy-durba and palm fans are kept in separate malas for each member of the family. The devotees fast and worship the mother.
